Colt Starting

At Spur H Horsemanship we believe that starting a colt is the most important phase of training.

90 Days

The 90-day program is designed to prepare a horse for basic ranch duties, trail riding, and to provide a solid overall foundation. A horse that completes this program should be easy to catch, stand quietly for the farrier, stand tied, load well into a trailer, accept saddling without issue, and ride out alone with confidence. By the end of the program, the horse should also be ready to begin learning more job-specific skills such as sorting, working an alley, and basic roping.

120 Days

The 120-day program builds on the foundation established in the 90-day program. Horses that complete this program are expected to do everything included in the 90-day program, as well as think through navigating new obstacles, track a cow at a basic level, turn on both the forehand and the hindquarters, begin roping a sled, and execute a rollback.
